Movie Reviews

I saw this last night at the opening of the Mill Valley film Festival. Arrival is unlike any movie I've ever seen. It's about love, loss, tolerance, language and non-linear time, wrapped in a science fiction story about our first encounter with extraterrestrials.

Under director Denis Villeneuve's masterful direction, Arrival takes its time to unfold, but it gradually gets under your skin and commands your attention. The last half hour was one of the most emotional experiences I've had at the movies in a long time. There aren't many movies these days that I would call required viewing, but this is one of them. And Amy Adams is Oscar-worthy in the lead role. In fact, Arrival could also win Oscars for original score, sound, direction and Best Picture.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016)

Storyline

Two-time Academy Award® winner Ang Lee brings his extraordinary vision to Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, based on the widely-acclaimed, bestselling novel. The film is told from the point of view of 19-year-old private Billy Lynn (newcomer Joe Alwyn) who, along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, becomes a hero after a harrowing Iraq battle and is brought home temporarily for a victory tour. Through flashbacks, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of the Thanksgiving Day football game, the film reveals what really happened to the squad - contrasting the realities of the war with America's perceptions. The film also stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, Garrett Hedlund, with Vin Diesel, and Steve Martin. Lee used new technology, shooting at an ultra-high frame rate for the first time in film history, to create an immersive digital experience helping him dramatize war in a way never seen before. Lee directed and produced the film, from a screenplay by Jean-Christophe ... Written by Sony Pictures Entertainment

Movie Reviews
Ang Lee: "As a New Yorker it is always a great honor to come here, and thank you. I know this is not easy to put out the new technology - it is not just a new technology, a new habit in watching movies - the way you engage in it, I hope it is different. It is a big effort to convert the theater, so we can project in the way I was shooting this. Right after the making of the movie Life of Pi , which I have a different reason in shooting digital and 3D, one answer I found ... I discover to have more questions: this is just closer to what I see and my eye was cramming for more details, more clarity, more lights, more performance , more ways of studying human faces, more drama, so I am in the curve of searching for the new answers in what digital film can offer us and two years ago Tom Rothman came to me with this wonderful book, it is a coming of age story, of a young solider , he did something heroic, and been brought back to celebrated it in a climax in a Dellas thanksgiving football halftime show. I thought to my self half time into movie if I could put the half time show and over the top half time show and where the soldiers are at the center of it with the sensation of the battle scene that he actually fire fight the experience, it will be quit a movie so I decide to go this terrifying journey, it's a long journey cuz most of the time I feel like I don't know how to make movies, that's very insecure. I am a honest person, so I let all my crew know that you are not good enough for the job and I constantly reminded them and they are okay with that, it's been a very brave, and heartfelt brilliant cast and crew to work with, the experience has been precious, cuz with that clarity what comes along is the freshest of devotion to the new dream we are creating.

Movie Reviews

A nice piece of kindergarten animation, not arty-farty, kinda primitive. However, if you don't mind children's movies (or maybe you are a 'bronie', or just have had a devotion for modeling clay when you were young), you won't be disappointed. There's nothing so special about the love story (it's rather a 'friendship tale'); Poppy, the plump pink Troll girl, happens to be gobbled up several times, either by an insatiable fish or by a predator plant (it's not clear how she got out and went on her way); all the Trolls really have a very 'tasty' look, reminding of cookies. The most developed character is the evil and toothy Chefin (as the Prince doesn't count). There's also some mockery of Cinderella's story which appears a bit entertaining (at first).

The cartoon hasn't got much sense, neither it has got full-fleshed characters (the one I really liked was King Peppy, but they gave him almost no time on screen). It can be watched, though, and even bring pleasure, if you just want to relax.

Doctor Strange (2016)

Marvel's "Doctor Strange" follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City's Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilising a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Written by Marvel

Movie Reviews

In a year with 5 other comic book movies being released, i guess you could say that making Doctor Strange seem different from the others would be quite a feat for Marvel Studios to pull off. But, surprise surprise... they do. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the stubborn, egotistical neurosurgeon whose personal tragedy leads him to join a legion of sorcerers and learn the complexities of the mystic arts. Although fans of the Sherlock series will say otherwise, this is the character that the guy was born to portray. He perfectly plays a man who develops from being overly cocky to being smart with his skills and knowledge. In terms of acting, positive things can be said about Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor, they ooze their individual personas like they aren't even playing a role. Rachel McAdams and Benedict Wong are also great but like plenty of Marvel's smaller characters, they just don't get that much screen time.

The problem with screen time also affects Mads Mikkelson's villain character as well. He isn't underdeveloped though, he just isn't in many scenes. The screen time problem with characters is something that could be forgiven though. The movie has a run time of 130 minutes and uses it very well. There is no filler whatsoever. Every scenes has a point. Whether its developing a character, advancing the plot or just making you laugh, director Scott Derickson has filled scenes with enough of every variable to get any viewer hooked. The movie even has some emotional moments too. A scene with Swinton and Cumberbatch having a quiet conversation while lightning crackles in a sky of drifting snow is one of the best shot scenes of this year... i'm not joking.

Two of Marvel's hallmarks, action and humour get a new lease of life in this movie. The insane, trippy dimension scenes are a love letter to Steve Ditko's iconic comic panels. Buildings twist out of shape, panes of glass ripple and entire street blocks fold in on themselves, creating a crazy CGI playground for characters to square of in. ILM and Marvel wonderfully visualise everything that make this character's lore unique. Relics, spells and locations all look amazing. If I was to gripe about visuals, i would mention the green screen. It is a bit hazy in some areas.

All in all, Marvel has done well with Doctor Strange. Origin stories can be clichéd and boring, but the trick is to do something different. Marvel have a formula that they use in not only their origin stories but all of their solo movies. However, it isn't specific and despite what people might say, that loose formula allows for some creativity. Guardians of the Galaxy and the Captain America sequels are proof of that. Roll on more Doctor Strange!
